The Three Pillars of Reiki
Reiki is more than a hands-on healing practice. It is a living spiritual discipline rooted in awareness, intention, and trust in universal life force energy. At the heart of Reiki are three foundational pillars that guide every session, whether you are receiving Reiki, practicing self Reiki, or training as a practitioner.
These pillars, Gasshō, Reiji-hō, and Chiryō, form the energetic and spiritual framework of Reiki, initially taught by Mikao Usui and carried through lineages today. Together, they invite us into presence, alignment, and healing that flows through the practitioner rather than from them.
Pillar One: Gassho
The Practice of Presence
Gassho is a meditative practice that brings the practitioner into stillness and awareness. With hands gently together at the heart or in prayer position, attention is drawn inward. This calms the mind, softens the nervous system, and anchors awareness into the present moment.
This pillar reminds us that Reiki begins with presence, not effort. When the practitioner is grounded and centered, Reiki flows more clearly and effortlessly.
Gassho supports:
- Mental clarity and focus
- Emotional grounding
- Nervous system regulation
- A deeper connection to self and Source

Pillar Two: Reiji-ho
The Practice of Intuition
Reiji-ho is the practice of intuitive guidance. Rather than following a fixed routine, the practitioner opens to Reiki’s wisdom and allows their hands to be guided to where healing is needed most.
This pillar teaches surrender and trust. Reiki intelligence knows exactly where to go, often beyond what the mind can perceive. The practitioner becomes a clear channel, listening with the body and spirit.
Reiji-ho encourages:
- Intuitive development
- Energetic awareness
- Confidence in inner guidance
- Deeper client-centered healing

Pillar Three: Chiryo
The Practice of Healing
Chiryo means treatment or healing work. This is where Reiki is offered through the hands, either through gentle touch or within the aura. The practitioner does not direct or manipulate energy. Reiki flows where it is needed to restore balance on physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual levels.
This pillar embodies the heart of Reiki. Healing happens through alignment and presence, supporting the body’s natural ability to heal itself.
Chiryo supports:
- Stress and anxiety relief
- Emotional release and integration
- Physical relaxation and pain support
- Overall energetic balance

How the Three Pillars Work Together
The Three Pillars are not steps to perform, but states of being to embody. Together, they create a Reiki session that feels calm, intuitive, and deeply supportive, whether you are receiving Reiki or offering it to another.
